On 17 January 2024, the Chinese communist regime released its official population figures, saying China’s population now stands at 1.41 billion, down 2 million from the year before.
This is the first time in decades that the government has admitted China’s population is shrinking. But the figure is very hard to believe. Set against what we know about the pandemic in China over the past three years, the death toll is huge, and the drop cannot be just 2 million.
For example:
China’s major mobile carriers reported that their subscriber numbers fell by 21 million in early 2020. Chinese netizens believe this sudden, unusual drop can only be explained by deaths from the COVID pandemic and the regime’s harsh lockdowns.
In fact, COVID kept spreading in mainland China from 2020 until after the “zero COVID” policy was lifted in December 2022, and it is still spreading now (early 2024). Notably, in late 2022 and early 2023, deaths from the disease soared after the regime dropped “zero COVID”. At the time, social media was flooded with videos of people rushing to hospitals, long rows of coffins, and crematoriums burning around the clock… You can watch the video “No place to bury the dead: what karma are the Chinese paying for?” for an overview:
By late 2023 and early 2024, Chinese social media was again flooded with videos of hospitals packed with sick, feverish children. Videos online show many hospitals crammed with parents and children seeking treatment. One children’s hospital in Beijing said it was seeing more than 7,000 patients a day. Chinese vaccines use an old (inactivated) technology and are made with Chinese production methods, so they may cause immune problems across the population, leading to many deaths. But people in mainland China can hardly learn the truth, because the state media hides it.
Two credible sources
According to the Chinese-language Epoch Times in early 2024, an anonymous Chinese official shared inside information from the Ministry of Public Security: the population registered with all police agencies nationwide is only 1 billion people. He also said that, based on what he learned inside the regime, the number of COVID deaths was enormous, and the real population is far below 1.4 billion.
There is also a second source.
In July 2022, hackers broke into the database of the Shanghai police, copied it, and then offered for sale the household registration records of people in mainland China along with other police records. The stolen database showed a population of 970 million. It caused a stir because of the sheer amount of data (23 terabytes), and many foreign newspapers reported on it.
In China, everyone must register their household. Otherwise, they are treated as illegal and can hardly get by. So household registration figures can be seen as the closest thing to the real population. From this, we can infer that by mid-2022, China’s real population had already fallen below 1 billion.
On 16 January 2023, Mr. Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, told the Chinese-language Epoch Times that the Chinese communist regime had covered up the epidemic for more than three years, and that the real death toll from the pandemic in China had reached 400 million. When this wave of the epidemic is over, China will have lost a total of 500 million people.
When We Are 1 published the article “400 million Chinese people have died”, many Vietnamese readers told us we were spreading false news. On top of that, many pro-regime online agents came to attack us over that report. So throughout the 2023 Lunar New Year, We Are 1’s volunteers worked hard to gather supporting evidence. You can see it at this link:
China could lose 600 million people in the long run
Beyond the epidemic, China’s birth rate has collapsed. It is now even lower than after World War II, when China’s economy was still very poor. The main causes are the one-child policy of the past and today’s high cost of living, which leave young couples afraid to have children.
The share of working-age people (25–54) is falling fast, while the share of elderly people is rising fast. Large numbers of young people will be unable to work because they have to care for the elderly.

To keep its population at today’s level, China needs a fertility rate of 2.1 (meaning each family has about two children or more). But the actual rate is around 1.0 or lower, as the chart below shows:

This will make China’s population shrink sharply within just a few decades. How sharply? Over 50 to 75 years, China could lose 600 million people simply because the population ages and dies off with no younger generation to replace it. The figure may sound unbelievable and shocking, but analysts have been talking about it for a long time.

So when “the world’s second-largest economy” loses a large part of its workforce and its population ages rapidly, what happens to productivity and economic output? Who will produce the GDP? This is the result of the Chinese communist regime’s cruel policies. China has become a wasteland in its economy, population, industry, morality and belief system, so it is no great surprise that the day has come for China to bear the consequences.
